Reis Trucking has picked up Nantucket's household trash since 1955 — we're the oldest and largest waste hauler on the island. Because of the island's historic character, trash isn't left at the curb: on pickup day our drivers retrieve bagged trash and recycling from wherever you store it, whether that's a barrel, a bin, or the garage. And we get there before the seagulls do.
Recycling
Nantucket's recycling bylaw requires glass, plastic and metal containers, and cardboard to be separated from household waste and deposited in designated areas at the landfill. We supply our residential customers with clear bags for recyclables, keep them separate on the truck, and deliver them to the right place.
Scheduling
Our trucks are in every part of the island twice a week; the specific days depend on where you live. Choose once- or twice-weekly pickup based on household size and how much you generate — most customers go twice-weekly, especially in summer. For the shoulder seasons, or a house that is only occupied now and then, we are happy to run on an on-call basis.
Miscellaneous debris
Oddball items — mops, brooms, hoses, wood or metal items — cannot be mixed in with regular trash or recycling. Leave them in the trash area on their own so the driver can handle them appropriately, and give the office a heads-up when you have something unusual. If the volume or type of debris is more than the regular truck can take, we will set up a special pickup.
Please be very careful not to leave anything in the trash area that you do not intend to throw away.

Trees and brush, the spoils of an attic or basement cleanout, remodeling debris — whatever has piled up, give us a call and we can make it go away.
Hazardous waste
Hazardous waste cannot be disposed of at the Nantucket landfill, so it cannot go in your regular trash or out on your regular pickup day. Call the office about oil-based paints, pesticides, and similar household items and we will arrange pickup in line with the Town's Hazardous Material Collection Dates, when a specialized contractor collects and disposes of them safely.
Latex paint is not hazardous: dry it out (kitty litter works well), leave the lids off, and we can dispose of the cans as metal.
